Applying the Gait Belt

  1. Ensure the patient is in a stable position, either seated or standing with support.
  2. Wrap the gait belt around the patient's waist, over their clothing, ensuring it is snug but not uncomfortably tight. The belt should be positioned around the patient's natural waist or lower back, depending on the specific transfer or ambulation need.
  3. Thread the strap through the quick-release buckle and pull to secure. Ensure there is enough slack to allow for a firm grip by the caregiver, typically 2-4 fingers width between the belt and the patient's body.
  4. Double-check that the buckle is securely fastened and the belt will not slip during use.

Assisting with Ambulation (Walking)

  1. Stand slightly behind and to one side of the patient, maintaining a wide base of support.
  2. Grasp the gait belt firmly with one or both hands, palms facing up, at the patient's back or sides.
  3. Guide the patient forward, providing support as needed. Be prepared to brace the patient if they lose balance.
  4. Maintain constant communication with the patient throughout the process.

Assisting with Transfers

  1. Position the patient close to the surface they are transferring to (e.g., bed to chair).
  2. Grasp the gait belt firmly. Use proper body mechanics, bending at the knees and keeping your back straight.
  3. On a count of three, or a pre-arranged signal, assist the patient in standing or pivoting to the new surface.
  4. Ensure the patient is stable and safely seated before releasing eriri.
